Research interests
Tim Gallagher was Professor or Organic Chemistry and received his BSc from University College Cardiff (1977) and PhD from Liverpool University (1980). He spent three years as a postdoctoral researcher with Professor Philip Magnus FRS at Indiana University (1980-1983).
In 1983 he was appointed as a Lecturer at the University of Bath and in 1992 he moved to the University of Bristol where he was Professor of Organic Chemistry, Head of the School of Chemistry (2006-12) and Dean of the Faculty of Science (2013-18). His research interests lie broadly within heterocyclic chemistry and spanned a range of topics. These included the development of synthetic methodology, study of reaction mechanism, natural product synthesis and the application of synthesis to areas of biological interest. He has particular interests in the design and synthesis of selective nicotinic ligands (based around cytisine) and in gaining an understanding of mechanism of action, as well as the chemistry of cyclic sulfamidates (jointly with Robin Bedford) as vehicles for asymmetric synthesis. He has collaborations (with Dek Woolfson) within the carbohydrate area based on an interest in understanding and exploiting carbohydrate-based interactions. For more details, pleasesee my own research page.
His work has been recognised by a number of awards, including the International Society of Heterocyclic Chemistry Katritzky Award (1999), the Royal Society of Chemistry’s (RSC) Tilden Lectureship (2004) and Heterocyclic Chemistry Award (2005). In 2005/6 he undertook sabbatical study leave based at the Instituto de Investigaciones Químicas (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas) in Seville, Spain. He served as Head of the School of Chemistry from 2006-2012 and since 2013 has been Dean of the Faculty of Science.
Professor Gallagher is a supervisor in the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Chemical Synthesis
