Research interests
I am a third year Music PhD student at the University of Bristol, funded by the AHRC. My project explores how trans-coded musical performance in queer spaces affects both individual and collective gender identity at drag shows in Bristol. I take a queer phenomenological and ethnographical approach to understanding this, centring experiences from within the queer and trans community. Further, through completing musical analysis of pop and dance tracks arising in my fieldwork, I explore trans-coded musical structures and the role they play.
I have presented my work at the following conferences:
- American Musicological Society
- Society for Ethnomusicology
- Music, Research, and Activism II
- British Forum for Ethnomusicology and Royal Musical Association PGR
- International Association for the Study of Popular Music UK/IRE PGR
- University of Bristol’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities PGR conference
- University of Bristol’s Faculty of Arts PGR Brat Symposium
Additionally, I am a Diversity and Inclusivity Advocate for the South, West & Wales Doctoral Training Partnership, where I work in a team to develop the Diversity and Inclusion framework into a programme of activities and support for current and prospective students.
