My project about 12th-century representations of emotions, clerical medical knowledge and marriage in romances produced in Champagne (France) examines Gautier d’Arras and Chrétien de Troyes's works together from a multi-faceted perspective.
At the end of the 12th century, when Chrétien de Troyes was composing his famous Arthurian romances in Old French at the court of Champagne, a lesser well-known cleric was experimenting his own aesthetics, at the same time and in the same place: Gautier d’Arras. It appears that, although for Chrétien matrimony was an essential part of the Arthurian knight’s adventures in a world full of fantasy and ‘merveille’, Gautier focused on psychological debates and gave a leading role to women in his realistic stories. While the first gets inspiration from the ‘matière de Bretagne’ and Arthur’s court, the latter ostensibly rejects the Arthurian trend.
