Research interests
My main field of research is Aegean Bronze Age archaeology, especially Minoan Crete. My research interests include mainstream archaeological work (e.g. archaeological fieldwork and the study of artefacts, especially ceramics), the history of scholarship, and the reception of the Minoans (i.e. modern responses to the material culture of Minoan Crete). I have directed or co-directed archaeological projects both in Crete and Turkey (Knossos, Iasos, Çaltilar, Eceler, and Palaikastro). I have acted as scientific advisor to museum exhibitions, such as La Grèce des origines : entre rêve et archéologie at the Musée d'Archéologie Nationale, Châteu Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Paris,(October 2014- February 2015) and the project 'Heirs to the Throne' at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Germany (ongoing). One of my recent books, In Search of the Labyrinth. (https://www.bloomsbury.com/uk/in-search-of-the-labyrinth-9781350156715/) was longlisted for the Runciman Award (2021)and shortlisted for the European Association of Archaeologies 2023 book prize. My current research projects focus on two of the most iconic finds from Crete, the so-called snake goddess figurines found at Knossos in 1903 (The Many Lives of a snake Goddess: https://mlsg.squarespace.com/) and on the publication of old excavations at Knossos in the area of the ‘Royal Road’.
Research supervision
I am interested in supervising students who want to explore Aegean Bronze Age topics close to my own research interests, especially themes related to the history of Aegean scholarship, the archaeology of Knossos (publication of legacy materials), the relationship between Crete and Anatolia, the intersections between the Aegean Bronze Age (especially Minoan Crete) and modern arts and other cultural practices. But I also welcome research proposal on other Aegean Bronze Age subjects.
