Biography
I joined SPAIS in 2019 as a Lecturer in Sociology. I am the Social Science Pathway Lead for the Foundation in Arts and Social Sciences program at the university. I am also the Widening Participation Lead for the Faculty of Social Science and Law. Before joining Bristol I worked in LSE, Birmingham City University and University of Warwick.
I use feminist theory and postcolonial theory to investigate gendered, raced and classed identities in South Asia, South Asian Diaspora in the UK and among 'muslim women'. I have researched widely the expereinces of South Asian Muslim women in education, workplace, media and their participation in political activism. My recent work explores migrant South Asian women's triple emotional labour during COVID19 and BLM movement. I am also committed to decolonising HE teaching and research in the UK.
I convene the UG unit Race and Racism; the foundation units Global Bristol, Introduction to Studies in Social Sciences and Individual project. I also supervise UG and PG dissertations. I am currently supervising PhD dissertations in 1) Muslim women's political activism and 2) Bengali Diaspora in the UK.
My first edited collection entitled Rethinking New Womanhood: Practices of gender, class, culture and religion was nominated for ICAS book prize for 'decentering knowledge about and in Asia'. I also edited the first of its kind journal special issue on Decolonising Gender in South Asia for Third World Thematics. My next monograph titled New Muslim Women of Bangladesh will be out in summer 2021.
Research interests
My research interests are broadly in the areas of gender, race and religion in South Asia and among Muslim women in the UK. My PhD research re-constructed the theory of the classed gender identity of New Woman in Bangladesh. I have applied this theorisation to further research on Bollywood and other media representation of women in South Asia. I have also published on women's roles in religious nationalism, Muslim women's political activism and migrant South Asian women's experiences in the UK. Recently, I edited a journal special issue on Decolonising Gender research in South Asia with Third World Thematics. I currently supervise a PhD student studying British Muslim women's Political Activism.
