Biography
My professional background covers engineering design, new product development, business planning and strategic management in the aerospace and civil engineering sectors. My first exposure to engineering management came when I was responsible for mechanical design solutions for products in service that were not meeting customer expectations. That quickly led to a desire to understand the market in more detail.
After a series of career promotions, I spent three years leading the strategic planning and analysis function in a multi-disciplinary engineering organisation, responsible for the management of the product strategy process. This experience taught me so much about the need for sustainable business development in global markets.
Having moved into the higher education sector, I was determined to educate future generations of professional engineers about the process of research and development to help them make a bigger and better contribution to the process earlier in their careers. It took me too long to understand the complexity of the business environment because my degree did not integrate business and societal factors into the engineering syllabus. I hope that my contributions are making a difference to the next generations of engineers that graduate from Bristol.
Teaching
I currently lead units on professional practice and engineering management at the undergraduate level. I also provide research supervision services to both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
My areas of expertise are teamwork, project planning/control, risk assessment and mitigation strategies, new product development and business planning.
