Juan Carlos is a teaching associate in management at the School of Management. Before becoming an academic, he developed a political career in Mexico, his home country, holding different leadership and executive positions. He holds a BSc in Political Science and Public Administration (Universidad Iberoamericana), a master’s in Public Policy (Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales-Mexico), a master’s in Public Administration (Harvard University), and he is currently a PhD candidate in Global Political Economy at the University of Bristol.
He has taught in higher education since 2016 at the University of Bristol, the University of the West of England, Universidad de las Américas Puebla, and Universidad Anáhuac Puebla. His teaching experience spans from introductory economics and political science courses; international political economy; economic policy; emerging economics; public management; and business development and value creation, among others. He has also developed and delivered academic writing skills support programme for international students. At the SoM, he is currently teaching public management, international business management, and management and organisation. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Research wise, his overarching concern is how societies can achieve their common good from an institutional and economic perspective. He pursues this concern through four research themes, which appeal to it at different levels:
- Global capitalism and agency, particularly how social actors and institutions engage for economic growth, the democratisation of wealth and the diminishment of the negative effects of capitalism.
- Business schools and their role in training business leaders and managers, who ultimately drive firms to innovate, provide decent employment opportunities, and sustainably gain profits.
- Multinational companies and their innovative capacity, especially how they draw from innovation systems, both at home and in host countries.
- Technology parks as policy tools that enhance firms’ innovation and foster economic development.
He is especially keen to analyse these phenomena from the public management and policy perspective, with a geographical focus on emerging markets.
