I am a volcanologist: the ambition at the centre of my research is the reduction of risk and prevention of disaster in volcanic settings. I focus both on volcanic processes, and the social processes that amplify volcanic risk.

Biography
My research focusses on both the fundamental physical understanding of volcanic processes, often using petrological methods, and on the integrative interdisciplinary research necessary to understand and tackle the core drivers of disaster losses.
I also have a long term interest in public engagement and communication, often featuring volcanoes in particular and the important role of the environmental sciences in everyone's lives in general.
