Teaching and student support in the Faculty of Life Sciences

Our teaching is informed by the research carried out in the Faculty. One of my main responsibilities is quality assurance of teaching and assessment of science undergraduate and postgraduate students on the variety of programmes in the Faculty of Life Sciences. I chair the Faculty Learning and Teaching Committee and the Faculty Exam Board. As Faculty Education Director for Taught Programmes and co‑chair of the Faculty Student Staff Liaison Committee (FSSLC), I welcome students to contact me if they have any concerns or issues they want to raise.

Consistent with my interests in education, I also attend University committees which focus on learning and teaching, including the University Education Committee and the University Learning and Teaching Committee. The educational landscape is constantly changing and I strive to ensure the staff of the Schools of Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Physiology, Pharmacology and Neuroscience, as well as Psychological Science, provide the best learning opportunity for our students. In addition to the undergraduate and postgraduate science programmes, I also have overarching responsibility for the teaching delivered for medical, dental and veterinary students by staff in the Faculty of Life Sciences.

I serve as School Admissions and Recruitment Officer for our pool of undergraduate programmes in Cellular and Molecular Medicine. One of the great pleasures of my position is to meet applicants with potential, at an Open Day or a post-offer Visit Day, and then watch them learn and mature as they study in our School and ultimately graduate with a University of Bristol BSc Honours degree.

As a result of partnership working with colleagues in the Careers Service, we launched a Biomedical Sciences Alumni Careers Evening in 2015.  The event has grown each year and this year we will be running online panel events. I continue as the Careers and Employability Lead for Cellular and Molecular Medicine.

I am an immunologist and I teach immunology to undergraduate students and postgraduate students on the MSc in Transfusion and Transplantation Sciences. The lectures I give to the final year undergraduate students build on my interests and previous research on T cell development and recognition.

In 2015 I submitted my CREATE portfolio and successfully completed the Level 3 Experienced Route of the University’s CREATE programme, culminating in my recognition as a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
