David graduated in 1987 with an intercalated degree in anatomical sciences from the University of Bristol before completing the veterinary degree in 1990.  He then spent a period in mixed practice during which he undertook the RCVS Certificate in Cattle Health and Production, prior to moving to the University of Glasgow in 1993. He subsequently gained Diplomas in Bovine Reproduction and Cattle Health and Production, becoming a RCVS Recognised Specialist in 2000 and European Veterinary Specialist in 2004.  He has been President of the European College of Bovine Health Management 2005-07, is a Board member of the British Cattle Veterinary Association (BCVA), and the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (BSAC) and chairs the British Veterinary Association (BVA) medicines committee.  He took up the position of Professor of Bovine Medicine, Production and Reproduction at Bristol in April 2011.
