Biography

Victoria Sharley is a Lecturer in Social Work with Children and Families in the School for Policy Studies. Victoria joined the University of Bristol in 2017 following completion of her PhD at Cardiff University.  She is a registered social worker with a background in local authority child protection practice and domestic violence, with over ten years’ experience of working with children and families. Victoria has worked in number of interprofessional and multi-disciplinary teams in both statutory and non-government settings. Consequently, Victoria’s research interests lie primarily within inter-professional social work practice in the context of child protection systems.

Victoria's doctoral research investigates how mainstream schools identify and respond to child neglect with the aim of improving the overall safety and welfare of children. The study examines the effectiveness of the relationship between the school and children’s services within an inter-professional environment.  It focuses upon the nature of the relationship between staff members within each field of responsibility, in the context of delivering effective safeguarding practice across the spectrum of child neglect.

Over the last ten years, Victoria has worked with children and families in a number of international settings, including domestic abuse services in the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Mexico. She holds a keen interest in global social work practice, and is a visiting lecturer at the University of Lapland, Finland for the annual International Social Work Summer School. Her current collaborative research with colleagues at the University of Namibia focuses upon children’s health and welfare and how neglect is conceptualised in the local context.

Victoria is a member of the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN) and the Association of Child Protection Professionals (AOCPPs).
