Transnational Organised Crime at Sea

Personal profile

I am a research associate for the Transnational Organised Crime at Sea project, PI - Professor Timothy Edmunds & CI - Professor Christian Bueger.

My research interests include maritime security, inter-state cooperative mechanisms for countering maritime security issues, the international relations of Southeast Asia, Malaysian politics, and Indonesian politics.

These research interests constituted my PhD thesis, which focused on the role of trust in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations security community. In particular, I focused on the mediating impact of trust on the crises that occurred between Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore, with an emphasis on maritime competition and parallel maritime cooperation. I argued that trust could institutionalise through trusting behaviours becoming ‘natural’, habitually carried out in response to practices of informal decision-making and consensus-seeking which became taken-for-granted indicators of trustworthiness. Through this trust had arguably become part of the background knowledge in the context of these patterned set of behaviours. My thesis was supervised by Professor Nicholas Wheeler at the University of Birmingham.
