Personal profile

My central research interest lies in ideas and public policy, specifically how and why policies are brought to the fore or rejected. This interest extends across all governance structures, including devolved administrations, local government, political parties and Parliament.

My academic endeavour is aimed at bridging the academic and practitioner worlds of politics. This passion stems from working in Parliament for eight years, in the Welsh Assembly and being an elected member at a local authority. I was also involved in two US presidential campaigns in 2008 and 2012.

My latest book, the Battle of Ideas in the Labour Party - From Attlee to Corbyn and Brexit, is an exploration of the ideas, and the people who have promoted those ideas, within the Labour party over the past 80 years. The last two chapters are an analysis of the Jeremy Corbyn era, focusing specifically on the ideas and policies his leadership team were considering and promoting. This analysis, inevitably, sheds light on the serious discussions at the top of the Labour party about Brexit and how to respond to economic globalisation more generally.

For my PhD, the thesis explored the role of ideas in the policymaking process during Ed Miliband’s leadership of the British Labour party, 2010 - 2015.The thesis extensively delved into the theoretical debates around policy change, interests, institutions and ideas. It investigated how and why ideas influenced the policies of a political party, including an analysis of the role of policy networks and think tanks. This was explored and tested against three ideas circulating around the Labour Party between 2010 and 2015: Blue Labour, One Nation and Pre-distribution
