Personal profile

BA (Hons) (University of Ibadan); BTh (Pontificia Università Urbaniana, Rome, Italy); Msc (University of Poitiers, France); MA (University of Poitiers, France).     Presently a PhD candidate in SPAIS, University of Bristol.

Within the wider academic field of peace studies and conflict resolution, Chuka's doctoral research investigates the root causes of violent ethnic mobilization in the constitutional democratic states of Africa, particularly in the Nigerian Niger-Delta region. Using the Kaufmanian ethnosymbolic theoretical framework as a  guide, the project seeks to analyse the mechanisms by which ethnic tensions metamorphose into full scale violent clashes. It equally aspires to comprehend why such violent confrontations often persist, despite governmental and non-governmental efforts at eradicating them.

Understanding the complex dynamics of politically salient intra-state violent conflicts is a necessary precondition for designing appropriate conflict resolution strategies. In this regard, the positive contribution of his project to political peace processes in Africa, and beyond, is not in doubt.

Chuka teaches Political Concepts (and theories) - an undergraduate course unit that covers a wide range of themes such as Power, Democracy, Justice, Multiculturalism and Feminism amongst others.

He may be consulted during his office hours which run on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10am to 12pm, and 2pm to 4pm. Please e-mail him ahead of time to schedule an appointment.

Fields of interest

His research interest extends to the following: multicultural and identity politics, ethnic conflicts and mediation, forced African migration to Europe and the latter’s response to the phenomenon, ethnicity and civic nationalism; and other issues relating to social justice and inequality.
