My applied research has focussed on measuring cost-effectiveness of healthcare interventions in randomised controlled trials and using decision analysis models.

I have particular interests in the economic evaluation of diagnostic tests and interventions for low back pain and sciatica, but collaborate widely with colleagues with interests in other clinical topics including cancer care, public health prevention, mental health and child health.

My methodological research interests centre on the use of variations in clinical practice as a method for commissioners and clinicians to identify and prioritise opportunities for disinvestment in healthcare.

I joined the University of Bristol in 2007 after previous appointments as a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Washington and a Research Assistant/Associate at the University of Cambridge.

Activities / Findings

I have demonstrated the association between injury, inadequate medical insurance and subsequent financial bankruptcy in the US and provided evidence questioning the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of spinal cord stimulators in patients with work-related back injuries.

With colleagues in Bristol, I have explored the cost-effectiveness of interventions to prevent smoking in adolescents and interventions to reduce body mass in overweight or obese primary school children.

I was co-Director of Graduate Studies for the Department of Population Health Sciences between 2013 and 2019 and Director of the research skills short course programme between 2008 and 2013. I organise the short course on 'Introduction to Economic Evaluation'.

I am a lecturer on health economics on the Undergraduate Medicine (MB ChB) programme, the MSc in Public Health, and MSc Economics programmes at the University of Bristol.
