Research summary

My main interest at present is the historical importance of the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) and the influence of this study, not only on subsequent longitudinal birth cohorts, but also on policy makers within the wider medical research community.  I am working on the archiving of the ALSPAC Administrative Archive, including obtaining oral histories from significant individuals involved in the planning and implementation of the study.  Having been secretary of the ALSPAC Ethics and Law Committee for 15 years, I have a particular interest in the development of policies when genetic material was first obtained from ...

Karen Birmingham has a background in general and psychiatric nursing, specialising in psychosocial nursing and Therapeutic Communities.  She has worked for ALSPAC since 1988 in a number of roles including piloting biological samples and questionnaires, supervising medical data abstraction, and for the last 8 years as secretary of the ALSPAC Ethics & Law Committee.  She is also employed to create the ALSPAC Ethics Archive to be incorporated in the main ALSPAC archive which is to be housed in the University of Bristol Library Special Collections.
