My research covers a wide range of clinical, organisational and methodological areas.

These include older age (e.g. dementia, healthy living, hospital avoidance), mental health (e.g. depression, anxiety), delivery of care (e.g. primary, secondary, ambulatory, emergency), study design / implementation (e.g. randomised controlled trials, observational studies), behavioural interventions (e.g. alcohol use, smoking, physical activity) and respiratory disease (e.g. COPD, childhood asthma).

I am a member of the following societies and networks:

  • Society of Academic Primary Care (SAPC)
  • North American Primary Care Research Group (NAPCRG)
  • UK Society of Behavioural Medicine (UKSBM)
  • Society of Social Medicine (SSM)
  • Health Services Research UK (HSRUK)
  • International Federation of Psychiatric Epidemiology (IFPE)
  • British Society of Gerontology (BSG)
  • Ageing and Society Research Network (ASRNet)

Activities / Findings

Findings of my latest research suggest there are safe, effective alternatives to hospital admission for older adults aged 65 and over.  Full details can be found at:

  • I am co-lead of the 'Urgent and Emergency Care' Student Selected Component (SSC) for 3rd and 4th year medical students at Bristol Medical School. I also run workshops for PhD students in both the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Faculty of Social Sciences & Law on 'Using Mixed Methods' within their doctoral research.
  • My teaching work has previously involved tutoring undergraduate medical students on the 'Society, Health & Medicine' course provided by the School of Social and Community Medicine as well as supporting postgraduate psychiatry students in the Centre of Academic Mental Health during their Royal College of Psychiatry examinations.
  • As an Honorary Teaching Fellow at Cardiff University, I have delivered lectures on research methods, critical appraisal skills and the sociology of medicine in addition to providing tutorial support to both medical and social science undergraduates.
