Summary

Biography

I graduated from the University of the West of England in 1995 having completed a degree in sociology.  I then went to Cardiff University and completed a PhD in the field of medical sociology that looked at the social and political dimensions of chronic fatigue syndrome.  I joined the primary care unit at Bristol in 2002 and have undertaken a number of research studies including: an evaluation of over the counter medicines and the role of the pharmacy counter assistant; evaluation of GP appointment systems; and the organisation of out of hours care.  In recent years I have also taken on the role of project management alongside qualitative and mixed methods research.  I am currently based in the NIHR Collaboration for leadership in Applied Health Research and Care West (CLAHRC West).

Teaching

I teach on the Society Health and Medicine Course that is delivered to first year medical students and contribute to the short courses that are delivered within the School of Social and Community Medicine.

Expertise

Since starting at the Division of Primary Care I have completed a research project investigating the role of the pharmacy counter assistant in the provision of over-the-counter medicines. I have just started on a new project that will examine the appointment systems used by GP practices and in particular the effectiveness of the system known as 'Advanced Access'. I am a social scientist with a particular interest in health related qualitative research. I took a first degree in sociology at the University of the West of England. I then completed a postgraduate diploma in social science research methods and a PhD at Cardiff University. My PhD examined the doctor-patient relationship in the field of chronic fatigue syndrome.
