Research summary

I run the ReSPonD (Rivastigmine to Stabilise Gait in Parkinson’s Disease) trial. This double blind, placebo controlled, randomised  control trial seeks to ascertain whether cholinesterase inhibitor therapy can stabilise gait and balance in people with Parkinson’s disease.  This may potentially prevent falls and the devastating consequences thereof.  The trial began recruiting in October 2012 achieved the target accrual of 130 participants by March 2013.   This will be the largest trial to date investigating the role of cognitive enhancement with cholinesterase inhibitor therapy for this indication.  It will further delineate ...

Biography

Dr Emily Henderson is a Consultant Geriatrician and lead for Movement Disorders Research at the Royal United Hospitals Bath and a Honorary Consultant Senior Lecturer at the University of Bristol. She was awarded a fellowship from Parkinson's-UK and The Association of British Neurologists to undertake a PhD in preventing falls in Parkinson’s.  The results of this phase II trial were published in Lancet Neurology in 2016.
