Summary

David is an academic GP who is also trained in Psychiatry. His research focuses on the treatment of anxiety and depression in primary care, mainly through large randomised trials of psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy. He has a particular interest in the development of online psychotherapy.


Major Depression is common with a lifetime prevalence of 1 in 6. It is ranked among the top 5 contributors to the global burden of disease. Antidepressants are usually the first-line treatment for depression and the number of prescriptions for antidepressants has risen dramatically in recent years; over 60 million presiptions were issued in the UK in 2016. However, treatment resistance is common; only half of those who take their antidepressants at an adequate dose for at least 6 weeks respond to treatment. 

Many people with depression would like to have psychotherapy, and the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies programme has greatly increased access. But
