His research interests are contemporary French Society and Culture, Critical Theory, Post-colonial literatures in French, Chanson française and French Cinema. His book: Chanson: the French singer-songwriter from Aristide Bruand to the present day was published in December 2000.
His current research focuses on the literatures and cultures of the francophone Indian Ocean. His book The Other Hybrid Archipelago: Introduction to the Literatures and Cultures of the Francophone Indian Ocean was published in 2007 and reissued as a paperback in 2009.

Peter Hawkins joined the Department of French in 1968, and held temporary posts at the University of Benin, Nigeria, (1977-79) and at the Université de la Réunion (1994-97). He was made Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Palmes académiques in 1998 and promoted Officier in 2009.
He was president of ASCALF, the Association for the Study of Caribbean and African Literature in French, 1989-94 and 1997-2000 and Vice-President 2000-2002. In 2002 the association was re-launched as the Society for Francophone Postcolonial Studies (SFPS).
