Research summary

I work mainly on three areas of modern Spain: socio-political conflict; crisis of traditional liberalism vis-à-vis the formation of political class consciousness; and praetorian politics. All of them can be integrated into the broader subject of the short and medium-term causes of the Spanish Civil War and in the analysis of the troubled modernization of the Spanish state as a laboratory of socio-political upheaval within a European perspective.

Biography

I am a Reader in Modern Spanish History at the Department of Hispanic, Portuguese and Latin American Studies in the Universityof Bristol. I taught before at Queen Mary College, London Metropolitan University and the London School of Economics. My main research interest is the analysis of the social and political origins of the Spanish Civil War. I have written extensively on the transition from elite to mass politics, the post First World War crisis of the Liberal Monarchy, popular protest and praetorian intervention in political society.
