More about this group

Screen Studies is a major research specialism in the School of Modern Languages.

A number of colleagues are active in the University's Screen Research @ Bristol research theme, of which Derek Duncan (Department of Italian) is co-leader. Duncan specialises in colonial and postcolonial Italian cinema, while Catherine O’Rawe, also in Italian, examines the relations between post-war Italian film and Hollywood. They have organised a number of research seminars on aspects of world cinema in addition to the LLAS funded workshop on Teaching Film in Modern Languages.

In French, cinema specialist Nick Rees-Roberts works on screen representations of gender and sexuality, and has recently published a monograph with Edinburgh University Press (2008).  Birgit Beumers, in Russian, was awarded a Leverhulme Research Fellowship (2007-09) to explore animation in children's cartoons from the 1920s to the present.

The school researchers in Screen Studies have close, fruitful collaboration (through shared research seminars, workshops and conferences) with Sarah Street and her colleagues in the Department of Drama: Film, Theatre, Television.
