Dr Sophia Adams

Biography

Summary

My research focuses on artefacts and contextual evidence from the later prehistoric period in Britain and northern Europe including metal finds, imagery and production processes.  I am currently working on a major research project funded by the Leverhulme Trust, investigating the social context of prehistoric non-ferrous metalworking in Britain, Ireland and the near Continent (in collaboration with Dr Joanna Bruck and Dr Leo Webley). This builds on my research interests in the manufacture, use and deposition of metal objects in later prehistory and our interpretation of this evidence.

Biography

In 2013 I completed my PhD research on Early and Middle Iron Age brooches in Britain. This was carried out under the auspices of a Collaborative Doctoral Award with the University of Leicester and the British Museum, funded by the AHRC. The study re-considered the typology and chronology of brooches alongside a detailed analysis of the finds context and consideration of how these objects were manufactured.

I have worked in the heritage sector since 1997 with experience ranging from development-led and research fieldwork in Britain, northern Europe, the Caribbean, and Mali, to teaching archaeology at Canterbury Christ Church University from 2005-2010. Through this work I have had the chance to study a variety of periods and evidence including Bronze Age Rock Art in Norway and diet and housing in medieval Europe. Recent fieldwork projects include a supervisory role on the excavation of the Iron Age hillfort at Burrough Hill, Leicestershire (with the University of Leicester and ULAS) and the Heritage Lottery Funded excavation of a medieval manor house at Shorne Woods Country Park, Kent.  In tandem with my academic work I am piloting a scheme to make archaeological finds and sites accessible to visually impaired people. I am also the Deputy Chair for the Later Prehistoric Finds Group. https://sites.google.com/site/laterprehistoricfindsgroup/
