My current research is focused on two main areas. The first is the nature and use of narratives and "life-stories" by South Africans from Settler backgrounds who have settled in the UK.
A key element of my research/creative work thus far has been concerned with Settler presence and culture in South Africa, and in particular with traces of “Britishness” in defined areas where significant settlement took place. That has been photographically based and has been concerned therefore with the ambiguities of visible evidence. Some of the outcomes can be seen at www.settlercountry.org

I grew up in South Africa, where I studied Philosophy and English. I then studied Film Production in London, and later (after returning to South Africa and as my interests in Education developed) Adult Education. After settling in Bristol, I studied photography, which I also practised for many years, undertaking several major projects. I have been Programme Director of the MA in Film and TV Production for 27 years, and alongside personal creative work, have simultaneously pursued enduring interests in the culture and politics of Southern Africa.
