Research summary

My current research is focused on two main areas. The first is the experience and politics of land and place in South- and Southern Africa. At a time of ongoing "post-colonial" re-assessment, contestation is both informal (often violent) and formal (by legislation around land reform), and local farmers, workers, and the rural poor find themselves negotiating immediate claims for access and redress alongside the circumstances of globalising capitalist production. Land and its ownership, uses, and meanings, are fundamental and pressing issues for the societies concerned.

I grew up in South Africa, where I studied Philosophy and English. I then studied Film Production in London, and later (after returning to South Africa and as my interests in Education developed) Adult Education. After settling in Bristol, I studied photography, which I also practised for many years, undertaking several major projects. I have been Programme Director of the MA in Film and TV Production for 27 years, and alongside personal creative work, have simultaneously pursued enduring interests in the culture and politics of  Southern Africa.
