Research summary

My research focuses on animation, film history and theory, intermediality, and the relationship between cinema and modernity. My first book, Film and Fairy Tales: The Birth of Modern Fantasy (I. B. Tauris, 2013) focused on the deep relationships between fairy tales, spectacle and cinema during its first decades. I am currently working on a five year project, funded by the European Research Council, entitled "The Idea of Animation" which examines the emergence of animation from 1915-1940 in France, the United States and the United Kingdom. Biography

My research focuses on animation, film history and theory, intermediality, and the relationship between cinema and modernity. I gained my PhD from the University of East Anglia in 2006, and joined the University of Bristol in 2008. My first book, Film and Fairy Tales: The Birth of Modern Fantasy, was published in 2013. I am currently working on an ERC-funded project entitled "The Idea of Animation" which explores the emergence of animation from 1915-1940 in France, the United States and the United Kingdom.
