Dr Kate Guthrie

My research interests lie in the social, political and cultural history of music in mid-twentieth-century Britain. At present, I am researching a book about some of the initiatives that developed in 1920s and ‘30s Britain to promote highbrow music to a wider audience. I am particularly interested in how the period’s technological advances, such as radio and cinema, and political instability, resulting from the rise of extremist ideologies, influenced the values attached to music in Britain.
