Biography

John Adams is Professor of Film & Screen Media Practice (emeritus) in the Drama Department: Theatre, Film, Television at the University of Bristol, UK. In 1986 he succeeded Professor George Brandt as Director of Film and Television Studies with the remit to develop the academic and professional content of postgraduate and undergraduate programmes. His approach centred on ways in which form and practice shape meaning and affect in both documentary and fiction through interrelations between technology, aesthetics, idea, circulation and reception.

He writes and lectures on location scenography, screen performance (as the embodiment of meaning and ideas), expanded cinema, documentary film, the UK film industry, and modes of practice research.

As a producer, writer and director John has developed films and theatre productions in the UK and abroad with a focus on progressive practice, ranging across work with the international mime David Glass to a television documentary on the philosopher Leopold Kohr and the multiple-screen narrative film Hindsight.

He co-founded and chaired the Watershed Media Centre (Bristol) and the production company Watershed Television Ltd. and is a member of professional and academic associations.

He has served on national research assessment and evaluation panels for film and media studies (including the RAE and REF), contributed to national policy initiatives for film, and acts as academic consultant in the field to a number of UK universities. He was the founder editor of the Journal of Media Practice (Sage Publications, 1998-ongoing).
