Research summary

John Pickard was born in 1963 and started to compose at an early age. He read for his B.Mus. degree at the Bangor University, where his composition teacher was William Mathias. Between 1984 and 1985 he studied with Louis Andriessen at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, Netherlands on a Dutch Ministry of Culture Scholarship. He was awarded a PhD in composition in 1989 and has worked at the University of Bristol since 1993.

Biography

I joined the University in 1993, working initially in the Department for Continuing Education. I was responsible for running a part-time degree in Music and for organising - and in many cases teaching - short courses and dayschools in Bristol and surrounding counties. In 1998 I transferred to the Music Department, initially doing the same sort of thing, but gradually became increasingly involved in Undergraduate and Postgraduate teaching, until, in 2003, I was fully absorbed into mainstream teaching.

I was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2003 and was awarded a Personal Chair in 2009.
