Dr Jimmy Hay

I joined the University of Bristol in 2016 having previously coordinated the BA degree in Film and Media Arts Production at University Centre Weston. Prior to that I taught Film Studies at the University of Swansea. Alongside my teaching I am also a practicing filmmaker and last year my first feature film, High Tide, received a UK cinema release. Most recently my short film, Zero Sum, premiered at Encounters Short Film Festival in 2016.

I received my Bachelors degree in Screen Studies at Swansea University in 2007, before completing an MA in Film Studies at Queen Mary and Westfield, University of London in 2009. This preceded my undertaking of a PhD by Practice, entitled Can You Show Me the Way Home Please: Neo-Melodrama in Contemporary European and American Independent Cinema, which I completed in March 2016. The practice element of my thesis was the fiction feature film High Tide, which served as a visual interrogation and illustration of the argument proposed in my thesis.

In addition to my practice as research outputs, I have also written on short film, and in particular the film Alumbramiento (Chapero-Jackson, 2009), and on the role of space and sexual behaviour in the films of Luis Buñuel and Michael Haneke.
