Summary

The Discovery Programme is the only autonomous institute for advanced research in archaeology in Ireland and a full outline of past and present research, publications and conferences and profiles of our staff can be found on our website

I am the Director of the latest research project designed to investigate both the Roman finds from Ireland and the extent of Roman influence on society and culture in the later Iron Age. The project is titled the Late Iron Age and Roman Ireland (LIARI) project and the research was designed as a series of modules with the results of the first 18 month pilot phase published towards the end of the summer. In keeping with my own area of doctoral research at UoB one of the key elements of the research is to investigate the movement of people and objects in this important period through new dating and the application of strontium and oxygen isotope analysis (human and faunal remains) and the study of copper sources through lead isotope analysis. Alongside this the research applies the latest innovations in technology and survey including LIDAR and photogrammetry to target areas of highest archaeological potential for detailed geophysical surveys. The project has been extended for a further two years and as we move in to Phase 2 we look forward to continuing to collaborate with our friends and colleagues at Bristol
