After graduation I went to work for the Noel Gay Organisation as a theatrical agent for comedy performers, presenters and writers, and then subsequently worked in television-related industries.  In the 1990s I worked at BBC Worldwide and then as both Chief Assistant and Head of Business Affairs for BBC Entertainment Television.   After this I went into academia, gaining a Masters degree in Theatre Studies at the University of New South Wales, Australia, and then a doctorate from the University of Bristol for my work on British television drama series.   I was a joint recipient of the Screen journal award in 2004/5 and winner of the BAFTSS Best Monograph Award in 2016.  My current post is Senior Lecturer in Television Studies.

I teach into a wide range of courses on television and film, and provide specialist undergraduate and postgraduate units on critical approaches Television Broadcasting, British Television Drama, TV Cultures, Television and Crime, and so on.  I have also enjoyed teaching across media, using theoretical material around concepts such as memory, reality, the historical event, narrative, class and gender, and steering students to develop their own projects.  I am currently supervising postgraduate dissertations and doctoral students, and would be interested in supervising any potential PhD applicants whose project is in line with my teaching or research interests.
