To study how the use of samba can – intentionally or unintentionally – influence the way films depict, contextualise, interpret and evaluate social, cultural and political features of contemporary Brazil, such as religion, class and national identity.

Biography

Hailing from Rio Grande do Sul in Southern Brazil, Hans Michael Anselmo Hess is a film composer, guitarist and samba specialist. He earned a master’s degree in composition from the University of Bristol, where he has been a visiting lecturer and guitar tutor in the Music Department since 2006. He has been writing music for short and feature films, as well as promotional videos. Recent projects includes composer and musical director for a dance workshops and theatrical play ‘The Bridges Project’ a theatrical play led by Edson Burton which combines urban and modern music.
