Research summary

Giles works on ancient philosophy (especially Plato and Aristotle), metaethics, ethics, and the philosophy of mind. His published work thus far has primarily focused on Aristotle's moral philosophy and philosophical psychology. He is also interested in aesthetics and certain topics in metaphysics. He has published two books: a monograph, Aristotle on Desire, with Cambridge University Press (2012), and an edited book (co-edited with Michael Pakaluk), Moral Psychology and Human Action in Aristotle, with Oxford University Press (2011). He is currently at work on a third, on Aristotle on the emotions.

Giles joined the department as a lecturer in September 2007.  He became a senior lecturer in 2013.  Prior to Bristol, he was a lecturer at Birkbeck College, London (2006-2007), and a research fellow at Christ’s College, Cambridge (2003-6).  He was a graduate student at St John’s College, Cambridge and was awarded his Ph.D. in philosophy in 2004.  For the academic year 2001-2, he was a Kennedy Scholar at Harvard University (affiliated to the Philosophy faculty).
