Research summary

As a cultural historian, my main interest of research is music and migration, especially the displacement of European musics and musicians caused by the extreme political upheavals and catastrophes that characterise the 20th century. I suggest that an approach to music through the lens of migration can challenge and enrich socio-cultural understandings of music as well as conceptions of music historiography.

My publications address topics such as avant-garde musics of migrant composers during World War II, music by émigrés for film, cabaret of diasporic communities, and historiographies of exile studies. Biography

I hold a BA in musicology and philosophy from the University of Hamburg, Germany, and also studied musicology in Salamanca, Spain. Equipped with a scholarship by the German Academic Exchange Programme (DAAD), I obtained my MMus at Royal Holloway, University of London in 2003. With funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and a Thomas Holloway studentship, I stayed at Royal Holloway for my PhD, which was supervised by Erik Levi and awarded in 2008.
