Summary

Biography

My research explores the lives of indigenous children and youth growing up amidst radical socioeconomic change in Amazonia, and asks what is the future of indigenous peoples in times of enhanced globalised exchanges and rapid expansion of neoliberal markets in Latin America.

Based on over 20 months of ethnographic fieldwork with Matses people in Peru, my work shows that children and youth play an active and crucial role in defining current and future developments of Amerindian societies, and as such a child-focussed analysis is not only relevant to the study of social transformation across the world but is also necessary for impact and policy.

My new research project, Indigenous Animations, is funded by the British Academy and uses animation as a method to explore how indigenous children and youth understand themselves in a changing world – and to engage them actively in the research process.

I am currently conducting fieldwork in collaboration with a professional Bristol-based animator and an indigenous artist in Peru, where we are working with indigenous children and young people to help them produce animated videos using their own drawings and storylines.
