Summary

My work principally focuses on film and television comedy, aesthetics, and screen performance. I am especially interested in the challenges of criticism in seeking to account for the detail of experience with regard to individual works of film and television. These challenges seem especially pressing for comedy, which is notoriously difficult to write about in ways that do justice to tone and humour.

Biography

I gained my doctorate in Film Studies from the University of Kent in 2006. My first book, The Body in Hollywood Slapstick, a treatment of the philosophy of the body guided by an appreciation of physical comedy, was published by McFarland in 2007. I joined the University of Bristol as Lecturer in Screen Studies in 2008 and played a major role in updating curricula and designing and developing new programmes in Film. I became Head of Film and Television in 2013. I'm a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, serve on the editorial board of Movie: A Journal of Film Criticism and regularly act as peer reviewer for academic publishers and journals.

Teaching

My principal areas of teaching are aesthetics, comedy and the history of film style. My units often combine the practice of close textual analysis with video production exercises. Option units I regularly teach include Filmmaking Through Hitchcock, Film and TV Comedy, Film Criticism, and Screen Style and Aesthetics.

I supervise various postgraduate researchers working in areas of criticism, metacriticism, aesthetic theory, and the history of comedy. I'm happy to receive enquiries from prospective PhD students.
