Sandra works with Early and Mid Career Researchers across 4 Faculties (Science, Life Science, Health Sciences and Engineering) to support grant development, typically Fellowship schemes to develop their research independence and lead their own groups.

She has knowledge of funding opportunities and advises on their suitability to project ideas and research and career stage, coordinates and manages grant applications as cohorts, assists with bid writing and supports preparation for mock panel interviews.

In 2019 she joined the University from The University of the West of England (UWE) as a Senior Research and Business Development Manager for the Faculty of Health and Applied Sciences. Here she gained a successful grant development support track record of £6.8m, predominately in EPSRC, ESRC, Innovate UK, MRC, BBSRC, Wellcome Trust and is a member of various industry-academia networks. In this role, she brokered relationships with partners in industry, the public sector and charities to initiate and develop multidisciplinary collaborative projects.

Prior to that, Sandra worked at the National Coordinating Centre for Public Engagement, supporting the largest public engagement research project funded within the Higher Education sector to improve links and dialogue between universities and the public to enhance research and impact to benefit the wider needs of society. She also worked for a research grant awarding body (Meningitis Research Foundation) where her responsibilities were around project management and communications.

During post-doctorate projects at the BBSRC Institute of Food Research in Norwich, UWE and Exeter University, she worked collaboratively with Heinz Foods, Kerry Ingredients and AstraZenca, and so has experience of working on real world challenges. Sandra has a 1st Class BSc Hons Biological and Biochemical Sciences and holds a PhD in Glucose metabolism in hepatocytes exposed to free radical stress from Newcastle University.
