    Abstract

    Considering similarities and differences between terrorism in the UK deriving from the Northern Irish Troubles and contemporary global jihad, this chapter concludes that, while all three central dimensions – socio-political background, type of terrorism, and characteristics of counter-terrorist law and policy – exhibit both similarities and differences, the differences are greatest on the first, while the last displays the most complex mix of continuity and discontinuity.
