Research Summary

Reece’s PhD research involves the study of the existence of legal fictions in international law, particularly the international law of the sea. He is examining the Philippines v China Arbitration (2016) award to explore the law of artificial islands as a recent and prominent example of international law maintaining a discrepancy between legal and physical reality. His research concerns how the law responds to changes to the physical geography and how it can meet the requirements of the new condition.

His supervisors are Professor Sir Malcolm D Evans and Professor Eirik Bjorge.

Biography

Reece Lewis is currently a PhD Candidate and Teacher at the University of Bristol Law School, having received a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) Postgraduate Research Scholarship. He is a member of the teaching team for Trusts, and formerly taught Jurisprudence at the Law School.

He holds an LLB Law from Cardiff University, achieving a first class degree. Reece was awarded Master of Laws with Distinction in International Law by the University of Bristol.
