Research summary

Jassi is an AHRC funded PhD candidate in International Law at the University of Bristol, where she is currently exploring the experiences of girl child soldiers in conflict (focusing on the Sri Lankan and Ugandan wars). Using postcolonial feminism and critical race theory as its theoretical framework, her thesis explores the social and cultural constructions of girlhood in existing gender and war narratives, and how these narratives have influenced, and manifest in, international law. Biography

She holds a BA in Geography from King’s College London and an LLM in Human Rights from Birkbeck College, where she was formerly senior editor of the Birkbeck Law Review and also recipient of the Paradiso Prize for Best Contribution to the School of Law (2014). She has held positions at Tourism Concern, the Crucible Centre for Human Rights Research, and most recently the Overseas Development Institute. Her particular areas of interest are gender and war, feminist legal theory, critical race theory, violence and conflict, children in armed conflict, and self-determination and civil resistance struggles.
