Dr Cian Murphy

Dr Murphy's research and teaching interests lie in the relationship between collective power and individual rights and the role that law plays in that relationship. His current writing focuses on the dynamics of transnational law and their impact on legality and will lead to a monograph, Control Beyond the State, to be published in 2019.

Dr Murphy sits on the editorial boards of the Common Law World Review and the European Human Rights Law Review. In 2016 he was convenor of the IACL Terrorism Research Group Annual Conference: Accountability for Transnational Counter-terrorism Operations. Dr Murphy is also the editor, with the late David D. Caron, of the Elgar Research Collection in Transnational Law, due for publication later this year.

Dr Murphy’s first monograph, EU Counter-terrorism Law: Pre-emption & the Rule of Law, won the SLS Birks Prize for Outstanding Legal Scholarship (Second Prize) in 2013, with an expanded edition published in 2015. In 2014 Dr Murphy published, with Diego Acosta Arcarazo, EU Security and Justice Law: After Lisbon and Stockholm.
