Summary

Dr Murphy's research and teaching interests lie in the relationship between collective power and individual rights and the role that law plays in that relationship. His current writing focuses on the dynamics of transnational law and their impact on legality and will lead to a monograph, Control Beyond the State, to be published in 2019.

Dr Murphy sits on the editorial boards of the Common Law World Review and the European Human Rights Law Review. In 2016 he was convenor of the IACL Terrorism Research Group Annual Conference: Accountability for Transnational Counter-terrorism Operations. Dr Murphy is also the editor, with the late David D. Caron, of the Elgar Research Collection in Transnational Law, due for publication later this year.

Dr Murphy’s first monograph, EU Counter-terrorism Law: Pre-emption & the Rule of Law, won the SLS Birks Prize for Outstanding Legal Scholarship (Second Prize) in 2013, with an expanded edition published in 2015. In 2014 Dr Murphy published, with Diego Acosta Arcarazo, EU Security and Justice Law: After Lisbon and Stockholm.

Biography

Dr Cian C. Murphy is Reader in Law. Prior to coming to Bristol he was Academic Co-Director at the Georgetown University-led Center for Transnational Legal Studies in London and taught at several London universities. He has been visiting lecturer on postgraduate degrees in the UK and Ireland, and at doctoral training centres at the University of Copenhagen and University of Oxford. He has also taught on the A4ID Law and Development Training Programme and is a member of the World Justice Project’s Rule of Law Research Consortium.

Dr Murphy is a member of the American Society of International Law, the Society of Legal Scholars and the Socio-Legal Studies Association. He has written for JustSecurity, EJIL:Talk!, and The Guardian, amongst others. In 2017 he was a speaker at the World Justice Forum in The Hague and an advisor to a study for the European Parliament's LIBE Committee on rights of suspects of terrorism. He has given evidence to Parliament in the field of national security law and undertakes pro bono and consultancy work in this field and in international dispute resolution.
