Biography

Achilles Skordas studied, and later taught, law at the University of Athens-Greece, and was awarded a PhD by the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University of Frankfurt-am-Main. He joined the University of Bristol as Reader in Law in 2006 and was appointed Professor of International Law in 2008.

Achilles has been a Visiting Professor at the University of Paris XII, a Visiting Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg, Research Scholar at Harvard Law School, and CLPE Fellow at Osgoode Hall Law School, York University, in Toronto. He is member of the Odysseus Academic Network for Legal Studies on Asylum and Immigration in Europe, and has previously been an advisor to the Greek Parliament on international legal issues.

Achilles’ research focuses on international security, international law and international relations, and on migration and asylum law and policy. He recently published a contribution in the Festschrift Hailbronner on 'asylum in the battlefield' (2013),  three entries in the Max-Planck Encyclopaedia of Public International Law on the preservation of peace, mass media in international relations, and supranational law (OUP, 2012, recently updated in the electronic version of the Encyclopaedia), and he is a contributor in Zimmermann’s Commentary of the 1951 Refugee Convention (OUP, 2011), and in Hailbronner’s Commentary on EU Immigration and Asylum Law (Hart/Beck/Nomos, 2010; 2nd edition by Hailbronner/Thym 2015, forthcoming). He is co-editor (with Panos Koutrakos) of a book on the 'Law and Practice of Piracy at Sea (Hart, 2014), and his monograph on ‘Risk and Force in World Society’ is forthcoming by OUP in 2016.
