Language Tutor

 

Under close supervision, to provide straightforward language teaching to small groups of students working within a prescriptive scheme of work (or equivalent) prepared by the Department. This provides details of the content and the materials to be used. Requires native language speaker competence in the language to be taught and a relevant language teaching qualification. The range of issues to be covered is prescribed and constrained by the nature of the materials provided. Applies assessment methods devised by others and may mark work submitted by students. A prescriptive framework is provided and support is available from academic staff.

Graduate Teacher - Level 2

Teacher

 

Provides lectures and/or primary small group teaching within an established unit which deals with the core knowledge base of the discipline (but does not need detailed current research/professional knowledge). Selects content and exercises/materials for own teaching sessions. Requires sufficient knowledge of the discipline, curriculum and teaching methods to promote depth of learning and understanding and ensure that learning objectives are met. May set assessment tasks and then act as principal marker for tasks set. Requires postgraduate/professional qualification. Some mentoring is provided by an academic (if required).

Associate Teacher 

 

Provides lectures and/or primary small group learning on more complex topics, drawing on current detailed research and/or professional knowledge. Expected to work independently in delivering own teaching. Able to help students to understand complex issues arising from recent research/professional developments. Requires research and/or professional qualification and experience.

Senior Associate Teacher

 

Provides lectures and/or primary small group learning drawing on deep specialist research and/or professional expertise and authoritative understanding of their field. Expected to work independently in delivering own teaching. Able to help students to understand new and difficult issues arising from recent research/professional developments. Requires deep expertise and authoritative understanding in the discipline and some teaching/training experience.

Teaching Unit Organiser

 

Takes responsibility for revising, planning and organising a unit within an established degree programme and takes lead responsibility for its delivery. Takes overall responsibility for the assessment of the students’ learning from the unit. Requires research and/or professional qualification and experience, and the ability to plan/organise an academic unit.

Teaching Unit Developer

 

Takes responsibility for planning and organising a new unit within an established degree programme and takes lead responsibility for its delivery. Uses deep research/professional expertise and authoritative understanding to design a new unit and develop the necessary learning materials. Takes overall responsibility for the assessment of the students’ learning from the unit. Requires deep expertise and authoritative understanding in the discipline and teaching/training experience.
