Research summary

Wendy Larner is Professor of Human Geography and Sociology, and Research Director for the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law. Her research is situated in the interdisciplinary fields of globalisation, governance and gender, and links insights from critical social theory with a strong commitment to empirical research. She challenges conventional understandings of globalisation as an inevitable ‘new reality’ by showing that it is a contested and contradictory process in the making. Wendy Larner has degrees from the University of Waikato, New Zealand (BSocSci, Geography and Politics, 1983), Canterbury, New Zealand (MA in Geography, First Class Honours, 1989) and Carleton, Canada (PhD in Political Economy, 1997).  Her previous positions include lectureships in the Department of Geography, University of Waikato (1990-91), and the Department of Sociology, University of Auckland (Lecturer 1997-99, Senior Lecturer 2000-2003, Senior Lecturer over the Bar 2004-2005).   She was appointed Professor of Human Geography and Sociology at the University of Bristol at the beginning of 2005.  She has received a number of awards for her research including both British and ...
