Research summary

Of the various factors controlling the distribution and ecology of coral reefs, dispersal by ocean currents may have particular significance to the future of reef ecosystems; influencing range shifts, resilience to degradation via population replenishment and also adaptive potential via the flow of genetic material.

My current research involves modeling coral dispersal and potential population connectivity on scales relevant to future environmental change. To do this I am using the Connectivity Modelling System, in development at RSMAS, University of Miami, adapted to the global scale.

Biography

I graduated in Geology with subsidiary Biology and Chemistry in 2004. After graduating I spent 2 years as an aviation weather forecaster with the UK Met Office, before leaving to pursue other interests. I returned to education in 2009, building on my background in Earth, biological and atmospheric sciences with a masters in Earth Systems Science, graduating with distinction in 2011. This was followed by a 6 month contract as a research assistant with BRIDGE. I am now continuing the research begun during my MRes thesis project as a PhD student in the School of Geographical Sciences.

Aside from my ...
