Biography

My primary research interests focus on the ecology of viruses in cold ecosystems. Viruses are the most abundant biological entity on the planet and likely infect all living organisms. They are drivers of microbial evolution through genetic exchange and community modification, encoding a large proportion of novel genes. My current research focuses on:
1) Quantifying the impact of viruses on bacterial activity, carbon and nutrient cycling in glacial ecosystems
2) Isolation of novel bacteriophages from cold environments, characterising their life cycle and response to varied environmental conditions.
