Research summary

Participation in both further and higher education have increased dramatically since the 1980s. However, despite this unprecedented rise in post-16 education, and calls to ‘widen participation’, access to FE and HE is not evenly distributed across England, and social and geographical inequalities persist.

This study is composed of two large scale projects that examine these inequalities. The first explores the factors that influence the propensity to stay on in post-16 education for one cohort of young people in England.
