Biography

Sebastian Poloczek studied Psychology and Special Needs Education at the Goethe University Frankfurt (Germany). There he also completed his PhD on the topic "Working memory and school achievement of children with Intellectual Disabilites". Subsequently, he continued to work at the Goethe University as a PostDoc. His projects were on children's strategy use in memory tasks and arithmetic tasks.

From October 2016 to September 2018, he worked as a Marie Curie Research Fellow at the University of Bristol (for details about the 2-year research project, see below). Since October 2018 he is again employed at the Goethe University Frankfurt, but also has visiting status at the University of Bristol.

Project: Childrens' Use of Rehearsal

What we want to find out?

The project combines different methods to study which strategies children use in verbal memory tasks, and particularly focusses on different forms of rehearsal (repeating words to oneself in one’s head).  We want to find out when children start to use these strategies and what effect this has on their ability to remember. 

As we combine tasks in which we ask children to report their strategies, with tasks in which we record behavioural indicators of strategy use, we will also examine how children can monitor and report their own cognitive processes. We will look at how these meta-cognitive abilities develop with age and how they are affected by other cognitive abilities.

Where we are at the moment?

From Februar 2017 until March 2018 about 200 children between the age of 6 and 11 years participated. We thank all schools, parents and children for their support. Most data were analysed, preliminary and easily readable results were sent to all participating schools and results were and still are being presented and discussed at scientific conferences (see list of presentations). As soon as results are published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, we will include references on this page.
